It all started when…

I’ve often thought about writing a book like this, but it took a nudge from one of my University of Southern California students to get me off my butt to do it.

Izzy Sellon was working on a project for another class in which she had to interview a person about how and why they started their business career, write a brief report, and present it. I was delighted that she chose me. We met after class and spent over an hour discussing my experiences and choices and how it could help Izzy shape her career. I was energized by the process.

Izzy told me, “Wow this is a great story with valuable lessons. You should share it with the class.”

Then I thought, why not share with everyone? So, here we are. Thanks, Izzy.

— Chapter 6

Writing this book has been a cathartic eighteen-month journey with occasional detours of apprehension and the constant fuel of appreciation. To push aside apprehension and stay on-track I constantly reminded myself that I wasn’t writing this book for me; it is a “live my legacy” gift to next-generation leaders. A persistent stream of remembering, reliving and revival, my appreciation for the love and support from family, friends, colleagues, and students grew while creating this book.

As you can imagine, over a career of 55 years there are many, many people that influenced my life and I’m forever grateful for their love, support, influence, and inspiration. While writing the book my appreciation for the bounty and blessings life and living have to offer has deepened and sharpened my perspective for which values and priorities are most important.

My wish is that it will do the same for you.
